SIMPLE RULES FOR BUYING ORGANIC VS. NON ORGANIC PRODUCE

Over the last decade there has been lots of talk on organic produce.  To me it is simple,  why combine toxic chemicals with food.  Not only is it not good for our body but it is also not good for the soil.  We are committed at Finca Santa Marta to growing organic produce and herbs.  Here are some simple rules to keep in my mind when shopping for produce whether it be organic or non organic.  Also remember that peeling and washing doesn’t take away the pesticides, it will help though.  Taking the skin off some these fruits and vegetable also means taking away lots of the nutrients.  Nutrients are often found in the skin, especially in apples and potatoes.

The MOST Contaminated Fruits and Veggies (Buy These Organic)

  1. Peach
  2. Apple
  3. Sweet Bell Pepper
  4. Celery
  5. Nectarine
  6. Strawberries
  7. Cherries
  8. Kale
  9. Lettuce
  10.  Grapes – Imported
  11.  Carrot
  12.  Pear
  13.  Collard Greens
  14.  Spinach
  15.  Potato
Generally speaking I like to think of it like this,  fruits and vegetables grown in colder climates are more likely to absorb the chemicals. So they are more important to buy organically.

On the flipside, the produce with the LEAST amount of pesticide residues are:

  1. Onion
  2. Avocado
  3. Sweet corn (frozen)
  4. Pineapple
  5. Mango
  6. Asparagus
  7. Sweet peas (frozen)
  8. Kiwi
  9. Cabbage
  10. Eggplant
  11. Papaya
  12. Watermelon
  13. Broccoli
  14. Tomato
  15. Sweet potato
